Chip Roy led several of his colleagues from the Texas delegation in a letter to the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) inquiring about their level of involvement with the National School Boards Association (NSBA)'s infamous letter released on September 29th asking the Department of Justice to treat concerned parents as domestic terrorists.\n\n\"Considering the heinous nature of NSBA's letter, Texas parents deserve to know the extent of TASB's involvement,\" the letter reads.\n\nOn September 17, 2021, the National School Board Association notified all State Associations that they were requesting federal law enforcement assistance from President Biden for dealing with \"threats\" at school board meetings. On September 29, 2021, they issued a letter that likened angry parents to \"domestic terrorism.\"\n\nThe members detailed three questions for the Texas Association of School Board, requesting a response:\n\nTo what extent did TASB know about the September 29th NSBA letter and when?\n\nDoes TASB agree with NSBA's decision to call on federal law enforcement to target parents?\n\nIf not, did any TASB member communicate their disagreement with this decision to NSBA?\n\nFull text of the letter is available at the link here and below:\n\nTexas Association of School Boards\n\nP.O. Box 400\n\nAustin, Texas 78787-0400\n\nDear Board of Directors,\n\nWe write to inquire about Texas Association of School Boards' (TASB) knowledge and involvement in the National School Boards Association's (NSBA) September 29th letter that likened parents voicing their concerns at school board meetings to \"domestic terrorism.\" While the NSBA letter has since been revoked, a Department of Justice whistleblower has now come forward showing that the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) Counterterrorism Division is compiling and categorizing threat assessments related to parents, including by directing FBI personnel to use a specific \"threat tag\" to track potential investigations.[1] It is imperative that Texas parents can trust that the TASB will protect their 1st Amendment right and ability to confidently speak up on behalf of their children and their children's education.\n\nAccording to FOIA documents from Parents Defending Education, on September 17, 2021 the NSBA notified all State Associations \u2013 which includes TASB \u2013 that a letter would be sent to President Biden requesting federal law enforcement intervene to deal with \"threats\" at local school board meetings.[2] This letter and request for federal involvement was clearly intended to intimidate parents into silence, threatening them for defending their values and children's educational interests.\n\nConsidering the heinous nature of NSBA's letter, Texas parents deserve to know the extent of TASB's involvement. Therefore, we request answers to the following questions:\n\nTo what extent did TASB know about the September 29th NSBA letter and when?\n\nDoes TASB agree with NSBA's decision to call on federal law enforcement to target parents?\n\nIf not, did any TASB member communicate their disagreement with this decision to NSBA?\n\nFinally, to date, twelve states have separated from the NSBA to demonstrate they definitively stand with parents. Why has TASB not officially separated from the NSBA? Organizations representing Texans' education should unequivocally support parents and their involvement in the children's education and not remain affiliated with national organizations that display otherwise.\n\nWe look forward to receiving a response to this letter soon.\n\nSincerely,\n\nChip Roy\n\nMember of Congress\n\nRandy K.
