VPIRG canvassers went door-to-door in cities and towns and villages throughout Vermont and collected about 30,000 signatures in support of legislation to require labels on food that contain genetically modified organisms. Sen. Bernie Sanders, who introduced legislation in Washington to make it clear that states have the right to require GMO food labels, spoke to the young volunteers outside the Statehouse in Montpelier. \u201cThe truth of\u00a0matter is that\u00a0labeling of GMOs is\u00a0not radical concept.\u00a0It's done throughout\u00a0Europe and\u00a0dozens and dozens\u00a0of countries\u00a0throughout world,\u00a0so if people tell you\u00a0it can't be done \u2013 it's too complicated\u00a0\u2013 they're not telling\u00a0you the truth,\u201d the senator said.\r\n\r\nLeah Marsters, one of VPIRG\u2019s canvas directors, talked about the importance of taking the campaign to people throughout Vermont. \u201cIt\u2019s hard to overstate the importance of direct, face-to-face conversations with people, especially in an age of non-stop social media,\u201d she said. \u201cYou learn a lot about what matters to people if you take the time to talk with them, and collectively we\u2019ve talked with about 50,000 Vermonters over the past 14 weeks.
