Schweikert. “The benefits of this free and fair trade agreement have been tremendous for Arizona, but we must ensure all parties hold up their end of the bargain. The Mexican government is failing to comply with its commitments under USMCA with troubling so-called reforms to its electricity law and its hydrocarbons law, and I am deeply concerned about the impact on market access for American businesses this will have moving forward. The United States must hold Mexico accountable for all its USMCA commitments, and I strongly urge Ambassador Tai to make this issue a top priority.”

Background

President López Obrador’s recent efforts to reform and overturn Mexico’s energy policies will adversely impact the environment, the people of Mexico, and the agreements within the USMCA. Ambassador Tai is responsible for overseeing the enforcement of USMCA commitments, and her office gives her the power to apply pressure to the Government of Mexico to adhere to these agreements.

This letter was also signed by: Rep. Adrian Smith (NE-03), Rep. Jodey Arrington (TX-17), and Rep. Carol Miller (WV-03).

To read the full text of the letter, click here.

###

Back to News", 1, "2026-03-30T01:40:41Z", "2026-04-08T02:06:17Z
url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at
url
https://schweikert.house.gov/2022/03/29/congressman-schweikert-sends-letter-to-ambassador-tai-urging-for-enforcement-of-usmca-commitments/
