Donna Shalala (FL-27) released the following statement to announce the winners of her district's 2019 Congressional App Challenge. The Congressional App Challenge is a yearly competition for middle and high school students encouraging them to learn to code and pursue careers in computer science and STEM fields:\r\nThis year we had an overwhelming amount of submissions from across South Florida. As a lifelong educator, the ingenuity and hard work of our students is truly inspiring. This year's winner is AED Locator, an application by Kamal Kay-Ramos, Joshua Delgado, Jake Charron and Jordan Schmidt of Gulliver Schools. This application assists those who are near a victim of cardiac arrest to find the nearest automated external defibrillator (AED) device available.\r\nTied for second place are Volunteerio and Shleep Helper. Volunteerio, an app by Mike Hickey and Paloma Hickey of Miami Beach Senior High School, seeks to streamline the volunteering process by allowing students and teachers to log and verify volunteer hours within the same application. Meanwhile, Shleep Helper, by Anthony Pena of Miami Senior High School, seeks to help those who have difficulty falling asleep through music and interactive games.\r\nThe talent of our South Florida students is truly remarkable. Their creativity and dedication is clear in the many submissions that our office received. I would like to thank our judges, Professor Geoff Sutcliffe of the University of Miami and Sarah Jacob, Senior Director of Product Management at CareCloud for their time and effort to reviewing each individual application.\r\nThank you to all the dedicated students who entered this year's competition.
