This current moment in history, when the Trump Administration is killing American citizens and terrorizing immigrant communities, demonstrates that the legacy of horrific violence and racial inequality towards immigrant communities by the federal government continues,\u201d said Congresswoman Simon. \u201cThis legislation establishes a path to address these injustices and demand the accountability communities deserve. \u201cI am proud to reintroduce this legislation with my colleague Congressman DeSaulnier and carry forward the torch lit by Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee.\n\n\u201cIn order to realize the founding ideals of our country, we must recognize and address the darker chapters in its history marked by discrimination and hate,\u201d said Congressman Mark DeSaulnier. \u201cI am proud to partner with Congresswoman Simon, who has been a strong leader on this issue, in introducing this legislation that will bring us closer to the promise of equality and justice for all.\u201d\n\nThe independent Commission established by this legislation would:\n\nReview cases of discrimination where individuals or groups have not received compensation for the actions of the federal agency;\n\nRecommend further legislative or executive action to address and resolve discriminatory instances;\n\nEstablish a procedure for the public to submit discrimination cases for review;\n\nHold the authority to issue a subpoena to any federal agency that the Commission deems necessary.\n\nThis bill was partially inspired by the case of the Port Chicago 50; and the legislation was previously introduced by then-Congresswoman, now Mayor of Oakland, Barbara Lee, and Congressman DeSaulnier in the 118th Congress.\n\n###", 1, "2026-09-25T10:04:52Z", "2026-09-25T10:05:46Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://simon.house.gov/media/press-releases/congresswoman-simon-and-congressman-desaulnier-introduce-legislation-establish"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 1.436480088159442, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
