Greg Stanton\u2019s bipartisan resolution calling on the Russian government to immediately release Brittney Griner and expressing support for efforts made by the U.S. government to secure her release.\n\n\u201cNot a day goes by that we aren\u2019t thinking of Brittney and working to get her home,\u201d said Stanton. \u201cWe will continue to push for her release and make sure that she is not forgotten.\u201d\n\n\u201cI\u2019m grateful for this overwhelming show of support from Congress. We need to be doing all we can to keep Brittney\u2019s case on the forefront and finally put an end to this nightmare,\u201d said Cherelle Griner, Brittney\u2019s wife.\n\n\u201cThis resolution sends a clear message: securing Brittney's release must be the highest priority of the U.S. Government, and we know the American people support every effort made to bring her home,\u201d said Terri Carmichael Jackson, executive director of the Women\u2019s National Basketball Players Association.\n\nStanton introduced the resolution last month with Reps. Sheila Jackson Lee and Colin Allred of Texas. Griner, a star for the WNBA\u2019s Phoenix Mercury, grew up in Houston, Texas and graduated from Baylor University.\n\nStanton spoke on the House floor ahead of final passage. [LINK]\n\nGriner was detained in a Moscow airport in February. She has played for the Russian women\u2019s professional basketball team, UMMC Ekaterinburg, for the past seven years during the WNBA off-season. Griner\u2019s detention has been extended until June 2.\n\nThe U.S. Department of State considers Griner to be wrongfully detained by the Russian Federation, which means the department, led by the Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs, will seek to negotiate her release.\n\nStanton and his House colleagues are continuing to work with the White House, the State Department, and Griner\u2019s family to secure her safe return.", 1, "2026-03-30T01:40:41Z", "2026-04-06T18:13:54Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://stanton.house.gov/2022/6/house-passes-stanton-s-bipartisan-resolution-pushing-for-brittney-griner-s-release"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 1.4965538866817951, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
