It ensures no lawmaker can profit off of insider information,\u201d said Steil. \u201cI urge my Senate colleagues to quickly take it up and send it to President Trump\u2019s desk.\u201d\n\nThe Stop Insider Trading Act bill prohibits Members of Congress, spouses, and dependent children from purchasing publicly traded stocks. The bill also requires public notice 7 days before a lawmaker, spouse, or dependent child may sell a stock. Finally, the bill institutes strict penalties for any violation.\n\nWatch Chairman Steil\u2019s closing remarks on the House Floor in support of the bill here.\n\nBackground:\n\nIn January 2026, Chairman Steil introduced the Stop Insider Trading Act.\n\nThe legislation:\n\nBans Members, their spouses, and their dependent children from purchasing a security issued by a publicly traded company.\n\nRequires Members of Congress to file a public notice at least 7 days, but no more than 14 days, in advance for each intended sale with the Clerk of the House of Representatives or Secretary of the Senate.\n\nPenalties for a violation:\n\nRequires the respective ethics committees to issue a fee equal to $2,000 or 10% of the value of the covered investment, whichever is greater.\n\nAlso requires forfeiture of any realized profit from a sale.\n\nThe Stop Insider Trading Act passed the House on a bipartisan vote of 232-198.\n\n###", 1, "2026-07-24T07:30:11Z", "2026-07-24T07:31:13Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://steil.house.gov/media/press-releases/house-passes-steil-s-congressional-stock-trading-ban"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 2.0152158103883266, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
