Mark Takano (D-Calif.) released this statement after Congressional Republicans and President Trump caused a third government shutdown this year:

“President Trump, who lauds himself as a master negotiator, just led our government into the third government shutdown in one year – all because he is demanding billions of dollars in funding for a wall that a majority of Americans do not support.

“As the President continues to hold our government hostage over funding for his useless, wasteful, racist wall, hundreds of thousands of federal employees will be forced to work without pay during the holiday season. This is truly a nightmare before Christmas that President Trump has orchestrated to appease his own ego and pretend to deliver on a xenophobic campaign promise.

“Republicans control the House, the Senate, and the White House, but as these past two years have shown us, they clearly do not know how to govern. I am ready to vote for a clean funding bill that will keep our government open and ensure that federal workers are paid. It’s time for my Republican colleagues to stop letting President Trump strong-arm them into making radical decisions that harm our nation and that a majority of Americans unequivocally oppose.”

###

Press Contact

Dayanara Ramirez (202) 225-2305", 1, "2026-03-30T01:40:41Z", "2026-06-27T23:11:43Z
url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at
url
https://takano.house.gov/newsroom/press-releases/rep-takano-statement-on-third-trump-shutdown
