Specifically, the legislation:\n\nBans camping on public property \u2014 no tents, tarps, or makeshift shelters on sidewalks, parks, or other public areas.\n\nEstablishes penalties for violations, with fines of up to $500 or up to 30 days in jail.\n\nEmpowers federal law enforcement to enforce the law when D.C. refuses to act.\n\n\u201cAllowing people to sleep in tents on the streets is not compassion \u2014 it is neglect,\u201d said Congressman Timmons. \u201cA tent is not housing, a sidewalk is not a home, and leaving men, women, and families exposed to crime, addiction, and despair is unacceptable.
