Torres (CA-35) today announced the Department of Justice will award $900,000 to Cal State LA for its Degrees of Hope program, which provides an opportunity for individuals incarcerated at the California Institution For Women in Chino to earn a bachelor's degree in person.\n\n\"We know how crucial education is to inmate rehabilitation and success,\" said Congresswoman Torres. \"We have seen this program to be immensely effective at men's facilities, and it is past time to offer the same opportunity to incarcerated women. In addition to earning a degree, which expands career opportunities and economic mobility, this program will help individuals develop strong positive relationships and reduce the likelihood of homelessness, which are key to preventing re-offenses. As a Member of the Appropriations Committee, I was proud to support funding for the Second Chance Act, which makes this new program possible.\"\n\nCal State LA has offered a face-to-face bachelor's degree program at California State Prison, Los Angeles County for six years, with a 0% recidivism rate among students. However, no women in the state have access to the benefits of an onsite bachelor degree program. Degrees of Hope will address this inequity by creating the state's first baccalaureate degree program for incarcerated women, and will directly address key reoffending risks including low educational attainment, homelessness, economic marginalization, and lack of positive relationships.\n\nThe federal funding is being awarded from the Department of Justice's Second Chance Act grant program, which funds efforts help incarcerated individuals successfully reintegrate into their communities when released.\n\nFor more information on the program, see full grant text here, or read success stories from Cal State LA here.\n\n###\n\nDepartamento de Justicia Entrega beca de $900,000 para programa de licenciatura en el Instituci\u00f3n de California para Mujeres\n\nWASHINGTON \u2013 Congresista Norma J.
