The legislation,forwhich Walden introducedcompanion legislation in the Housein 2019, wouldnullify a fraudulent treaty with the Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs Reservation, and clearly validate an 1855 treaty that establishes the tribes' reservation and preserves certain hunting, gathering, and fishing rights.The bill now heads to the President for signing into law.    \"The Warm Springs Treaty of 1865 has long beenrecognized as afraud and a sham,\"said Walden.\"The U.S. Government has not enforced the treaty and FederalCourts have also regarded it as fraudulent.I am pleased that today the House has passedthislegislation to nullify this unfair treaty, which willensure that the tribes'rights under the 1855treatyare fully recognized. Iamproud to have worked with Senators Wyden and Merkley to correct this historical anomaly andIlook forward to President Trump signing this bill into lawso thatwe can fully right this longstanding wrong.\"    Background Information:  In 1855, the Warm Springs Tribesentered into a treaty with the United Statesdefining the trustingrelationship between the partiesand establishing rights to land and off-reservation hunting and fishing.    However, in 1865, an unscrupulous Superintendent of Indian Affairs for Oregon, J.W.PeritHuntington, wrote a supplemental treaty that amended the 1855 agreement to prohibit members of the Warm Springs from leaving their reservation without government permission and relinquishing all off-reservation rights.    The 1865 treatysought to undermine thehunting and fishing rights that were protected in the 1855 treaty.", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://walden.house.gov/media-center/press-releases/greg-walden-statement-house-passage-bill-nullify-fraudulent-warm-springs"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 1.8095890991389751, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
