Walters Announces Congressional App Challenge Winner", "2016-12-19", "2016", "2016-12", "Republican", "House", "CA", "Mimi Walters", "W000820", "walters.house.gov", null, null, "legacy", "Irvine, CA \u2013 Today, Congresswoman Mimi Walters announced the winner of the 2016 Congressional App Challenge for California\u2019s 45th District. \u00a0Speaking about the Congressional App Challenge, Congresswoman Walters said:\n\u201cOrange County\u2019s students are among the brightest in the country, and I was so impressed by the apps they submitted to the Congressional App Challenge.\u00a0 This year\u2019s winner is Shalin Shah, a student at Tesoro High School in Rancho Santa Margarita.\u00a0 We were impressed by his technical skill and his desire to improve healthcare for people who might otherwise be unable to access it.\u00a0 Congratulations to Shalin, the other winners, and the honorable mentions! I thank all of the brilliant students who created apps this year and look forward to hosting the Congressional App Challenge again in 2017.\u201d\n\u201cGlaucoma is one of the most deadly eye diseases, causing people permanent vision loss,\u201d said Shalin Shah. \u201cUnfortunately, without regular visits to the doctors, there\u2019s no way people can know they have glaucoma, ultimately resulting in unnecessary blindness. \u00a0Lumos can help people screen themselves for glaucoma without even the need for doctors and potentially save millions of people from losing vision. \u00a0Throughout the months it took me to research and develop Lumos, I have not only explored so many new areas of computer science and biology, but I\u2019ve also been able to contribute to the STEM community in a new way. And that\u2019s what means the most to me.\u201d\nBeckman High School\u2019s Sara Du was the first runner-up with her app rePear, which provides support for people struggling with depression. \u00a0Sishir Giri, who attends Tustin High School, was awarded third place for his app, Caucus, to help students find more straightforward answers to their questions.\u00a0 University High School\u2019s Anne Xu earned an honorable mention in the sustainability category for her app, Green Guide, to make it easier for young learners to find information on waste disposal.\u00a0 Roxanna and Sarina Rabiee won honorable mentions in the \u201cstudents helping students\u201d category for their app that enables students to create schedules to more effectively manage their time; Roxanna attends University High School, and Sarina is a fourth grader at Turtle Rock Elementary.\u00a0 Yufeng Zhou of Santa Margarita Catholic High School was awarded an honorable mention in the healthy living category for his app that teaches the basics of exercise and fitness.\nThe winners were selected by a panel of educators in Orange County who specialize in computer science and innovation.\u00a0\nWalters represents California\u2019s 45th District and serves on the House Transportation and Infrastructure and Judiciary Committees.\n###", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://walters.house.gov/media-center/press-releases/rep-walters-announces-congressional-app-challenge-winner"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 1.5209140256047249, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
