Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Bill Nelson (D-FL), bans the possession, use or manufacturing of any weapon that cannot be recognized by a metal detector or X-ray machine.\u00a0    \t\u00a0    \tAn existing prohibition on such weapons was set to expire at midnight Monday. \u00a0    \t\u00a0    \t\u201cWeapons like this pose a threat to our security and personal safety,\u201d Nelson said. \u00a0\u201cWe\u2019ve got to keep them off our streets and out the hands of those who would do us harm.\u201d    \t\u00a0    \tThe measure was passed without a vote by agreement of Senate leadership. \u00a0It was passed by the House last week and now goes to the president for his signature. \u00a0It keeps the ban on plastic weapons in place for at least ten more years.    \t\u00a0    \tWith advances in new technology, someone with a sophisticated 3-D printer could produce a fully-functioning plastic firearm that could be slipped through metal detectors without sounding any alarm.    \t\u00a0    \tLaw enforcement, fearing the smuggling of weapons through airport security and other sensitive areas, has called for a reauthorization of what is known as the Undetectable Firearms Act of 1988.    \t\u00a0   ###", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://web.archive.org/web/20140221023020/http://www.billnelson.senate.gov/news/details.cfm?id=349171&"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 0.8205689955502748, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
