Kennedy was murdered by an assassin as he rode through the streets of Dallas, Texas. Just a young student at Yale University, U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) still recalls how much he was influenced by JFK's call to public service, and his view of service as noble work. Like so many Americans, Nelson says he will never forget the precise moment he and his international politics classmates heard the awful news. To mark tomorrow’s somber milestone, Nelson has recorded a brief statement about where he was, and what he was doing, when he heard the news that President Kennedy was shot. Click here to watch. Here’s the transcript of Nelson’s remarks: “Anyone who was alive in 1963 knows exactly where they were, remember it crystal clear, when we heard the news that President Kennedy was shot. I was a student at Yale, in my international politics class. The professor came late because of the news, and he spent the next half hour tracing the history of political assassinations. When we left the class, we were dumbfounded, and so many of us gathered around a car stopped in the middle of the street with an open window, where the radio news was blaring out into the street. It’s a tragedy that’s indelibly etched in my mind and in America’s soul.” ###", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at
url
https://web.archive.org/web/20140221023026/http://www.billnelson.senate.gov/news/details.cfm?id=348106&
