Dear Fellow Coloradan,
Despite the more than two-week government shutdown and imminent threat of a default on our nation's obligations, the U.S. Senate bridged the partisan divide and found a common-sense way forward. This agreement ensures that we can once again focus on strengthening our economy and boosting job creators.
This bipartisan collaboration also shows that brinksmanship and games of political chicken don’t bring results — they only hurt the economy, Main Street businesses and middle-class families. Throughout the shutdown, I spoke with Coloradans who asked why one faction of one party in one house of Congress was willing to do such damage to our economy.
I’ve wondered that, too. Coloradans are strong and independent — and I am honored to represent our state in Washington — but we also understand that America is at its best when we stand together to face our common challenges.
Although the shutdown and threat of a default was costly, in the end I was proud to bring Colorado's spirit of strength, independence and pragmatism to this agreement. And I was gratified to lead the effort to include deficit-neutral language in the final bill that will allow Colorado to access up to $450 million to rebuild the roads, highways and bridges washed away in the September floods. This was a major victory for our state, and I appreciate all the support you showed me along the way as I fought for passage of this flood-relief provision.
Now that we have moved past the brinksmanship that threatened our economic recovery and families across Colorado, we should turn to the challenges facing our nation. It’s time to practice the art of consensus-building and compromise. We need a long-term plan to responsibly reduce the federal budget deficit. We need to fix our broken immigration system and boost good-paying American energy jobs. And we need to look at constructive ways to improve the Affordable Care Act.
As we get back to work, I will continue to push for the bipartisan solutions Coloradans support. Our country is strongest when we work together.
Warm regards,

       Tags: e-newsletter", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at
url
https://web.archive.org/web/20140221194428/http://www.markudall.senate.gov/?p=blog&id=3788
