The group of more than 25 Members collaborating on the Honest Proposal met as recently as last week and will continue meeting ahead of the February 7th default deadline to solidify details and pitch to other Members.
“The letter is a clear-cut outline of the proposal we’ve been working on and a signal to the President we are serious about putting it into play,” Congressman Reed said. “I hope the President is sincere in his words that he wants to work with Congress to discuss ideas and implement solutions that will address the long-term needs of America.”
Reed is taking the President up on his offer when last month the President said he was “willing to work with anybody…Democrat or Republican, House or Senate members on any idea that will grow our economy, create new jobs, strengthen the middle class, and get our fiscal house in order for the long term.”
The Honest Proposal’s first step raises the February 7th debt ceiling limit by the amount equal to the spending reductions, reforms, and removal of waste, fraud, and abuse already identified by both Republicans and Democrats. Congressman Reed’s letter to the White House included suggestions for $573 billion worth of spending reforms. Step two includes a debate on comprehensive tax reform to promote fairness and debate on ensuring solvency for Social Security and Medicare. If a vote on those two initiatives is taken, the debt ceiling will be automatically extended for an additional year.
Finally, if either tax reform or reforms to preserve Social Security and Medicare for the future is signed into law within the expiration of the additional one year debt ceiling extension, the debt ceiling limit will be automatically raised for two more years.
“There is a fundamental recognition among our group that it is time to tackle our debt and spending issues – not through crises, cliffs, or shutdown deadlines but through a long-term bipartisan plan,” Reed continued. “Good policy must triumph over politics and that sentiment is gaining momentum as evidenced by the group’s expansion beyond the freshman and sophomore class I went to Washington with.”
Text of Congressman Reed’s letter to the White House is attached.
#####", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at
url
https://web.archive.org/web/20140301025746/http://reed.house.gov/press-release/congressman-tom-reed%E2%80%99s-honest-proposal-sent-white-house
