Kennedy in Dallas on November 22, 1963.\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cWhen President Kennedy was assassinated, something died in those of us who knew him, and something died in America.\u00a0 He was the first American president to say that the issue of civil rights and social justice was a moral issue.\u00a0 He represented our hope, our idealism, our dreams about what America could become.\u00a0 He made us believe that we could do anything, tackle any challenge, and that through our efforts we could help heal the problems of the world.\u00a0\n\u201cMany people, some who still serve in public office today, got involved with public service because they were inspired by President Kennedy.\u00a0 People joined the Peace Corps, they ran for public office, they volunteered and gave their assistance not simply due to a mandate, but because his leadership made them believe they could make a difference.\u00a0 When he died, a light went out in America and the nation has never quite been the same since.\u00a0\n\u201cThe last time I saw President Kennedy alive was the day of the March on Washington.\u00a0 He invited all the speakers to the White House after the march was over.\u00a0 I can still see him standing in the door of the Oval House beaming, waiting to greet us.\u00a0 He shook the hand of each person saying, \u201cYou did a good job.\u00a0 You did a good job.\u201d And when he got to Dr. King he said, \u201cAnd you had a dream.\u201d\n\u201cPresident John F. Kennedy represented the youth, the vigor, the intellect, the imagination and ingenuity of the American identity.\u00a0 We lost a great leader in Dallas on November 22nd.\u00a0 I am not so sure we will be so lucky or so blessed to ever see his likeness again.\u201d\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 ###", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://web.archive.org/web/20140301093649/http://johnlewis.house.gov/press-release/rep-john-lewis-legacy-president-john-f-kennedy"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 0.8972007781267166, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
