The U.S. Department of Defense currently does not have the authority to pay death gratuities and other benefits for the survivors of service members killed in action due to a lapse in government appropriations that started on Oct. 1, 2013.  \n\t\u201cThis is an outrage caused by the government shutdown. To have benefits denied for the families of fallen service members, who gave their lives defending our country, is disgraceful. This bill would ensure that despite the government closure, survivor benefits would be paid,\u201d Congressman Kildee said.\n\u201cIn addition to veterans, service members, and their families, the government shutdown continues to negatively affect millions of families, seniors and children. The Senate has already passed a continuing resolution that immediately stops the shutdown; it\u2019s time that the House of Representatives does the same, without any further delay. We could return furloughed employees to their jobs and restore all critical government functions tonight \u2013 from cancer research to Head Start \u2013 if a vote were allowed to happen on a resolution to reopen the government,\u201d Congressman Kildee said.\nThe bill that Congressman Kildee cosponsored, H.J. Res 91, is expected to be voted on by the U.S. House of Representatives today. It would allow the Department of Defense to pay out survivor benefits normally paid out to families of fallen service members, including a death gratuity, monetary reimbursement for funeral expenses, payments of survivor Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH), monetary reimbursement for funeral travel and monetary reimbursement for travel associated with dignified transfer.\nOn September 29, 2013, Congressman Kildee also voted in favor of the Pay Our Military Act, which ensures that members of the U.S. Armed Forces continue to get paid during the government shutdown.
