Sewell welcomed Amani Moore to the U.S. Capitol for a reception honoring finalists for the 2014 Congressional Art Competition.  Amani\u2019s artwork, \u201cMelancholy Candor\u201d, was chosen by a panel of 11 judges to be displayed in the U.S. Capitol building during a reception at the Alabama School of Fine Arts on April 26, 2014. Today, she was recognized in a ceremony at the U.S. Capitol for Congressional Art Competition finalists from across the country. Amani is a rising senior at Jefferson County International Baccalaureate and is a student at the Shades Valley Visual Arts and Communication Academy. She is the daughter of Albert and Sandrieka Moore. Amani\u2019s hobbies include modeling, drawing, meteorology, and playing the saxophone.  \u201cI am honored to welcome Amani Moore to our nation\u2019s capital today to be recognized nationally for her remarkable talent and creativity,\u201d said Rep. Sewell. \u201cAmani represents the very best that our state and the 7th Congressional District has to offer and I am confident she will continue to make us proud in her academic and artistic pursuits. She is a brilliant, talented and well-rounded young lady with a bright future ahead of her. Amani\u2019s artwork will be showcased in the Capitol this year as a representation of the talent in Alabama\u2019s 7th Congressional District.\u201d  Following today\u2019s reception, Amani explained, \u201cI have enjoyed being able to see the different talents, styles and ideas demonstrated in the artwork from other young artists across the country today. My piece, \u2018Melancholy Candor\u2019 is about having a voice and being able to speak out despite feeling boxed in.\u201d \u00a0\u00a0  \u00a0\u201cI am always inspired by the artistic talents and abilities of students across the 7th District. I believe it is critically important that we recognize, encourage and cultivate artistic talent in our young people. Sewell. \u00a0  ###  Background on the Annual Congressional Art Competition  The Congressional Art Competition was started in 1982 to provide an opportunity for Members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. Since then, over 650,000 high school students have been involved with the nationwide competition.  The competition is open to all high school students (grades 9 - 12) in the 7th District.
