David Vitter (R-La.), Chairman of the U.S. Senate Border Security Caucus, is calling on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to vote on legislation to address the southern border crisis. Before the U.S. House of Representatives adjourned for August, they passed two bills to address the border crisis by blocking President Barack Obama from continuing or expanding amnesty through the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
"We have a true crisis at our southern border. Yet Harry Reid is blocking Senate votes on the two bills the House has passed and has put us in recess instead. I call on him to have the Senate vote on those two common-sense, House-passed bills immediately,” said Vitter.
Earlier this week it was reported by TIME Magazine that the “wave of unaccompanied children streaming across the U.S. border has compounded a court crisis, as advocates warn backlogs and a shortage of lawyers…”
Vitter has also stated that the number of illegal immigrant children in Louisiana is higher than the Obama administration has let on. He had to confirm through an anonymous Immigrations and Customs Enforcement official that there have been 1,259 new cases opened for juveniles in Louisiana since the crisis began. There were already 1,956 juvenile cases, putting the total at 3,215.
On the Senate floor recently, Vitter highlighted that the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has confirmed that of the 381,458 apprehensions in the Rio Grande Valley sector of the Southwestern Border since October 1, 2013, only 57,567 or (15 percent) were children 17 or younger; 268,493 were adults without children.
Click here to watch Vitter’s recent remarks on the Senate floor.
Vitter has been calling out the administration for its practices of assisting foreign children being smuggled into the country illegally without penalizing their parents.
