The School Access to Emergency Epinephrine Act will protect children with life threatening allergies and bring peace of mind to parents across the country who no longer have to worry when they send an allergic child to school. According to the Centers for Disease Control, almost 90 percent of schools have at least one student who suffers from food allergies.\u00a0 As co-chair of the Congressional Asthma and Allergy Caucus, I applaud the passage of this common-sense legislation. However, our nation must continue working to find a cure for asthma and allergies.\u201d BACKGROUND:  \n\tCo-chaired by Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter (D-NH), Congressman Eliot Engel (D-NY), and Congressman Bill Cassidy (R-LA), the bipartisan Congressional Asthma and Allergy Caucus consists of Members of Congress dedicated to increasing public awareness and advancing research for those living with asthma and severe allergies. Currently, 20 million Americans suffer from asthma and 50 million suffer from all types of allergies. Asthma is the most common chronic condition among children, affecting 1 in every 20 children, and approximately 2.2 million school-aged children have food allergies. Each year, the costs of asthma total $20 billion and the costs of allergies approach $7 billion.
