This is not a perfect bill. Nor is it a bill that I, or most Americans, are celebrating. It is a necessary compromise in the face of an unnecessary government shutdown.\n\u201cThe shutdown cost our economy $24 billion, and it costs thousands of Americans access to vital government services. We cannot continue to govern by crisis. It hurts small businesses, working families, and America\u2019s economic standing in the world.\n\u201cGoing forward, Congress must work out a long-term budget to reduce the deficit, invest in job creation, and strengthen the middle class. I am hopeful that cooler heads will prevail in that debate and that our country will benefit from more common sense.\u201d\n\u00a0\nBACKGROUND\nEarlier today, Congresswoman Shea-Porter spoke about the effects of the government shutdown on New Hampshire\u2019s economy and federal workers at a joint Congressional hearing.
