Collins, King Announce $25 Million in Federal Funding for Sarah Mildred Long Bridge Renovation", "2014-09-08", "2014", "2014-09", "Republican", "House", "ME", "Susan Collins", "C001035", "web.archive.org", null, null, "legacy", "WASHINGTON, D.C. \u2013 U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King today announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation will award $25 million in grant funding to the Maine Department of Transportation to replace the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge connecting Kittery, ME and Portsmouth, NH.\u00a0 Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx notified Senator Collins of the Transportation Investment Generation Economic Recovery (TIGER) VI funding during a phone call this evening.   \u00a0   Senator Collins, the Ranking Member of the Senate Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee, has spoken personally with Secretary Foxx on multiple occasions to advocate on behalf of Maine\u2019s application for this grant.\u00a0Senator King has also spoken with Secretary Foxx, and in April of this year, both Senators Collins and King wrote to him in support of the project.\u00a0   \u00a0   \u201cThis is fantastic news for Kittery and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, which relies heavily on this bridge for the safe transportation of materials from the shipyard,\u201d Senator Collins said.\u00a0 \u201cFor years I have been pressing the Department of Transportation to fund this renovation.\u00a0 It is long past due that the bridge, which the Federal Highway Administration has classified as structurally deficient, be replaced.\u00a0 It is absolutely essential that shipyard facilities and infrastructure match the skill and dedication of the men and women who work there, and this project is an important step toward that end.\u201d\u00a0\u201cThis award is great news,\u201d Senator King said. \u201cThe Sarah Mildred Long Bridge is a vital link between Maine and New Hampshire that supports regional commerce, promotes local economic activity, and \u2013 with the rail line into Portsmouth Naval Shipyard \u2013 serves our national security interests.
