Since the government shutdown on October 1, 2013, Speaker of the House John Boehner has failed to schedule a vote on the same Senate-passed continuing resolution to reopen and restore all functions of the government.\n\u201cIt's time to end the dysfunction in Washington and reopen the government as quickly as possible for Michiganders and all Americans,\u201d Congressman Kildee said. \u201cSpeaker Boehner has repeatedly refused to bring the Senate-passed resolution to the floor for a simple vote, despite support by the majority of the House of Representatives. This discharge petition, which I support, would immediately schedule a vote to reopen government so people can get back to work, government services can be restored, and my constituents can get the benefits they have earned and the services they pay for,\u201d Congressman Kildee said.\nAccording to CNN, there are enough votes in the House to immediately reopen the government, but Speaker Boehner continues to refuse to schedule a vote.\nThe unnecessary government shutdown is having a devastating impact on both Michigan and the nation\u2019s economy. Last week, State Budget Director John Nixon said that each day of the government shutdown is costing Michigan $18 million a day. Nationally, the shutdown is costing more than $300 million in taxpayer dollars a day. Additionally, more than 250 business groups, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the National Retail Federation and the National Association of Manufacturers recently urged Congress to pass a resolution to immediately reopen government.\nCongressman Kildee has repeatedly urged Speaker Boehner to bring the Senate-passed continuing resolution to the floor for a vote since the shutdown began. He, along with his democratic colleagues, have offered 14 motions since October 1st to take up the Senate-passed continuing resolution and end the government shutdown, but their efforts have been blocked each time.\nThis discharge petition to open the government needs a majority of House Members to force a vote on a bill to reopen government.
