Butterfield (NC-01) and David Price (NC-04) announced today that the City of Durham has been awarded $222,700 in funding from the United States Department of Transportation\u2019s TIGER IV program for the Duke Beltline Trail Master Plan:  \u201cI\u2019ve been working with the City for over a decade on the Duke Beltline Trail Master Plan, which will make Durham an even better place to live,\u201d said Representative Price. \u201cThe Department of Transportation TIGER grant is a smart investment that will create new outdoor recreation and transportation opportunities for residents of central Durham.\u201d  The Duke Beltline Trail Master Plan will turn a 2-mile stretch of historic Norfolk-Southern rail corridor into a crescent trail connecting Duke Park with downtown Durham. The trail will be open to walkers, bikers, and horseback riders.\u00a0  \u201cAs the City of Durham and the Triangle area continue to grow it becomes even more vital to invest intelligently in ways to make the area more livable and more connected,\u201d Representative Butterfield said. \u201cThe future of transportation in North Carolina must enable people to access different modes of transport easily and improve the quality of life by providing opportunities for people to stay active.\u00a0 This TIGER grant is positive for people who live in, work in, or visit Durham, and I thank Secretary Foxx for supporting this project.\u201d  Since the signing of the Railroad Revitalization and Regulatory Reform Act in 1976, rails-to-trails projects have created over 20,000 miles of healthier spaces nationwide, including the American Tobacco Trail.
