Many survivors of domestic violence delay their departures from abusive relationships out of concern for their pets. Congresswoman Sinema’s work in the Arizona state legislature led to the passage of a similar law at the state level.
“Domestic violence is unacceptable, and we must do everything we can to eliminate this scourge and support survivors,” said Sinema. “The PAWS Act makes it easier for survivors to escape abusive relationships and secure the safety of their families. In 2010, I worked to pass a similar law in Arizona, and I will continue to fight for domestic violence survivors at the national level. It’s simply the right thing to do.”
“Congresswoman Sinema has consistently provided leadership in addressing the challenges domestic violence victims face in seeking safety,” said Allie Bones, chief executive officer of the Arizona Coalition to End Sexual and Domestic Violence. “A significant challenge that victims face is whether to leave behind their pets. This legislation provides important safeguards that will improve access to safety for victims escaping abusive situations.”
Studies estimate that roughly one-third of domestic violence survivors delay their departures from abusive relationships out of fear for their pets. As a result of Sinema’s efforts, Arizona is one of twenty-nine states that have recognized the importance of addressing this problem by allowing domestic violence protective orders to include the protection of a pet.
###", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at
url
https://web.archive.org/web/20140926002654/http://sinema.house.gov/index.cfm/press-releases?ContentRecord_id=FE16863D-EFB4-494C-9CA0-E856458F71B3
