{"database": "press", "table": "releases", "rows": [["https://web.archive.org/web/20141031221134/http://bridenstine.house.gov/media-center/in-the-news/the-internal-revenue-service-never-directs-taxpayers-to-put-money-on-a-pre", "The Internal Revenue Service NEVER directs taxpayers to put money on a pre-paid card!", "2014-10-31", "2014", "2014-10", "Republican", "House", "OK", "Jim Bridenstine", "B001283", "web.archive.org", null, null, "legacy", "The calls can seem scary and legitimate at the beginning.\u00a0 They know your name, they know the last 4 digits of your SSN, and they reference a specific amount of money you owe.\u00a0 They insist on immediate payment, even threatening arrest if you hang up!\u00a0 They sometimes keep victims on their cell phone the whole time they are going to the store and buying the pre-paid card!\nThe latest twist is that they tell victims to show up with payment at a specific IRS office.\u00a0 It is not the one closest to the victim\u2019s home.\u00a0 It is often an inconvenient 50 miles away. (Using the IRS office makes this seem more legitimate.)\u00a0 After the victim acquires the pre-paid card, the scammer\u00a0 \u201cgenerously\u201d offers to let them off the hook for the lengthy drive.\u00a0 They \u201cpermit\u201d the victim to settle the debt by giving the scammer the numbers off the back of the card, without having to make the trip to the IRS office.\nWe continue to hear heartbreaking stories of victims of this impersonation scam.\u00a0 The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) is actively following leads and making arrests.\u00a0 Victims are asked to report the information on-line at:\u00a0\nhttp://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://web.archive.org/web/20141031221134/http://bridenstine.house.gov/media-center/in-the-news/the-internal-revenue-service-never-directs-taxpayers-to-put-money-on-a-pre"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 0.8022221736609936, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
