Sadly, women\u00a0in Iran\u00a0face daily abuse, in some cases promoted by\u00a0the Iranian government.\u00a0From\u00a0acid attacks on women in public venues to systemic support for domestic violence against women at home,\u00a0the human rights situation in Iran remains unacceptable.\u00a0\nA March 2014 UN Report stated:\u00a0\u201cLaws that permit gender discrimination and promote violence against women continue to be introduced in Iran. The revised Islamic Penal Code, which came into force in June 2013, retains provisions that are discriminatory towards women. For instance, it values women\u2019s testimony in a court of law as half that of a man\u2019s, and a woman\u2019s life half that of a man\u2019s.\u201d\nThe Iranian legal system is\u00a0also\u00a0overtly hostile to\u00a0sexual assault\u00a0victims, forcing them to prove their innocence or risk being punished for adultery.\u00a0 Girls as young as nine can be married in Iran, and \u201cnonconsensual sexual relations in marriage\u201d are still legal.\u00a0\nWomen\u2019s rights are human rights.
