The proposal also includes retroactive relief for victims scammed between 2021 and 2025.\n\n\u201cIf you\u2019ve been scammed out of your hard-earned savings or lost everything in a disaster, you shouldn\u2019t then get stuck with a tax bill for money you don\u2019t have,\u201d said Senator Baldwin. \u201cIt\u2019s just plain wrong, and I\u2019m proud that our commonsense proposal passed the House and is one step closer to giving victims the relief they deserve.\u201d\n\nThe Nonbusiness Casualty and Theft Loss Deduction was eliminated in 2018, forcing survivors of scams and natural disasters to pay taxes on their financial losses.\n\nThe provisions were passed as part of legislation led by Representative Tom Suozzi (D-NY-03).\n\nFull text of the bill is available here.\n\n###", 1, "2026-09-26T09:43:57Z", "2026-09-26T09:44:55Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://www.baldwin.senate.gov/news/press-releases/baldwin-proposal-providing-tax-relief-for-victims-of-scams-and-disasters-passes-house"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 0.9542959742248058, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
