Dystonia causes involuntary muscle contractions, and while research is ongoing, there is no cure.\n\nSen. Jim Banks (R-Ind.): \u201cHundreds of thousands of Americans, including service members and veterans, live with dystonia, but too many cases still go misdiagnosed and undiagnosed. Raising awareness will help more Americans recognize the symptoms, support those living with the disorder, and inspire further researchto find a cure.\u201d\n\nThe Resolution:\n\nExpresses support for designating September as Dystonia Awareness Month.\n\nRecognizes the need for further research into new treatments and a cure.\n\nCommends medical professionals and researchers working to improve the lives of people with dystonia.\n\nEncourages programs and activities that raise public awareness and understanding of dystonia.\n\nBackground:\n\nDystonia causes excessive, involuntary muscle contractions that can result in abnormal movements or postures and affect a person\u2019s ability to walk, speak, see, or perform tasks. There is currently no cure, but several treatments can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life. Further research is underway to develop new treatments and ultimately find a cure.
