The legislation requires the Secretary of the Interior to develop regional management frameworks for the take of double-crested cormorants.\n\n\u201cAlabama\u2019s catfish farmers play a crucial role in our state\u2019s economy and put food on the table for hardworking families. We should be taking every step to ensure their continued success. Cormorants pose a significant threat to catfish populations, and that\u2019s why I\u2019m proud to join Senator Cruz in introducing this legislation to streamline burdensome regulations and bolster states\u2019 abilities to work with the Department of the Interior to protect this critical industry,\u201d said Senator Britt\n\n\u201cExcessive double-crested cormorant populations are harming fisheries, aquaculture operations, and private waters across Texas. This bill gives Texans the tools they need to responsibly manage these populations,\u201d said Senator Cruz.\n\nU.S. Representative Tim Walberg (R-Mich.) introduced companion legislation in the House of Representatives.\n\n\u201cOur fisheries are essential to our nation\u2019s economy, outdoor recreation, and cultural heritage. Recreational fishing across the United States generates significant economic benefit, supporting jobs and tourism-driven economies nationwide. When double crested cormorant populations grow beyond sustainable levels, they can significantly deplete fish stocks. This legislation ensures we have a responsible, science driven framework to protect the health of our fisheries,\u201d said Representative Walberg.\n\nThe introduction of this legislation builds on Senator Britt\u2019s work to protect Alabama\u2019s catfish industry.
