Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today applauded the U.S. Department of Education\u2019s final decision to deny the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools\u2019 (ACICS) appeal and revoke its status as a recognized accreditor for institutions of higher education. ACICS gave accreditation to ITT Education Services, Inc. (ITT Tech) and Corinthian Colleges, Inc, both of which closed, leaving many students with debt but no degrees. All institutions that were accredited by ACICS will have two years to find a new accreditor. ED will also require them to comply with additional operating conditions, including monitoring, transparency, oversight, and accountability measures in order to continue participating in federal student aid programs.\u00a0\r\n\u201cWhen bad actors like ACICS hand out accreditation without rigorous oversight, they give for-profit colleges a free pass to shortchange students,\u201d Brown said. \u201cFar too many for-profit colleges are collecting federal financial aid funds but shirking their duty to provide students with the education that they deserve. By revoking ACICS ability to empower more fraudulent for-profit colleges, the Department of Education is ensuring that both students and taxpayers are protected.\u201d\r\nBrown continues to work to protect students from predatory practices. Last month, following the\u00a0release of data from the U.S. Department of Education\u00a0which revealed that graduates of for-profit colleges\u2019 career training programs earn significantly less than their public college counterparts, Brown reiterated his call for increased oversight of for-profit colleges to ensure they are providing students with the education and return on their investment that they were promised.\u00a0\r\n\u00a0In July 2015, Brown\u00a0called on ED\u00a0to take a proactive role in protecting students attending poor performing, for-profit colleges.
