The Senate passed their bipartisan Drive Safer Sunday Resolution unanimously.\n\n\u201cThe Sunday after Thanksgiving is one of the busiest\u2014if not the busiest\u2014travel day in our country,\u201d Senator Capito said. \u201cOur resolution encourages everyone that will be on our roads to drive carefully because safety is and will always be my top transportation priority.\u201d\n\n\u201cAs a father of two young children, the safety of my family is paramount when traveling to see loved ones during the holidays,\u201d Senator Reverend Warnock said. \u201cWe know safer streets require each of us to play our part, so I implore Georgians and all Americans to exercise caution amid the busy holiday season.\u201d\n\nDuring the 2021 Thanksgiving weekend, there were 361 passenger deaths in traffic crashes, and half of all victims were unrestrained by a seat belt. Moreover, of the 361 deaths over the 2021 Thanksgiving weekend, 190 involved alcohol-impaired driving crashes. In 2021, 280 people lost their lives on West Virginia roads. And last year in West Virginia, three individuals died and two were injured in a Thanksgiving crash on I-79.\n\nThis resolution designates the Sunday after Thanksgiving as \u201cDrive Safer Sunday\u201d and encourages:\n\nK-12 schools, colleges, teachers, and administrators to launch campus-wide educational campaigns to urge students to focus on safe driving;\n\nTrucking firms to alert employees to focus on safe driving the Sunday after Thanksgiving and publicize its importance on the Citizens Band Radio Service and at truck stops;\n\nClergy to remind congregations to travel safely when attending services;\n\nLaw enforcement to remind drivers and passengers to drive safely;\n\nAmericans wear seat belts and educate themselves about highway safety.\n\nThe full text of the resolution can be found here.\n\n# # #", 1, "2026-03-30T01:40:41Z", "2026-04-08T01:01:09Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://www.capito.senate.gov/news/press-releases/ahead-of-thanksgiving-holiday-bipartisan-drive-safer-sunday-resolution-led-by-capito-and-warnock-passes-senate"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 0.8070277981460094, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
