The senators\u2019 resolution highlights and celebrates the importance of STEM Education in the United States and emphasizes the need to bolster and diversify the STEM workforce. Today also marks the two-year anniversary of Senators Capito and Rosen launching the Senate\u2019s first Women in STEM Caucus, a bipartisan group that works to advance women\u2019s participation in STEM education and careers.\n\n\u201cSTEM fields are where the in-demand jobs are right now, and it\u2019s where they will be in the future. These are jobs in industries that are critical to our economy, will help our states and country as a whole grow,\u201d Senator Capito said. \u201cI am proud to help introduce this resolution designating Nov. 8 as National STEM Day to celebrate this growing field and inspire the next generation to get excited and involved in this field.\u201d\n\n\u201cAs a former computer programmer, I know firsthand how important STEM education is for the jobs of the future,\u201d Senator Rosen said. \u201cThis bipartisan resolution recognizes November 8th as National STEM Day to celebrate STEM education and encourage more students to pursue careers in these fields.\u201d\n\nBACKGROUND:\n\nThis bipartisan resolution has been endorsed by STEM Education Coalition, Society of Women Engineers, the Afterschool Alliance, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, Center for Excellence in Education, the Association for Women in Science, Code.org, and The American Mathematical Society. In addition to Senators Capito and Rosen, it is co-sponsored by Senator Tina Smith (D-Min.).\n\nSince joining the Senate, Senator Capito has strongly advocated for more female involvement in STEM fields through legislative efforts. Additionally, as West Virginia\u2019s first female U.S. Senator, Senator Capito launched a female empowerment program known as, West Virginia Girls Rise Up, which inspires the next generation of female leaders through education, physical fitness, and self-confidence. Since launching, Senator Capito has hosted several STEM-focused Girls Rise Up events with NASA Astronaut Peggy Whitson, IBM, and NASA Astronaut Loral O\u2019Hara.\n\nAdditionally, Senators Capito led efforts to introduce the Building Blocks of STEM Act, which was signed into law in 2019.
