Deputy Riley did not survive his injuries. Captain Stassi remains in critical but stable condition.\n\n\u201cMr. President, a tragedy like this reminds us that law enforcement officers put their lives on the line for us every single day,\u201d said Dr. Cassidy.\n\n\u201cDeputy Riley gave his life protecting our community,\u201d continued Dr. Cassidy. \u201cWe pray for his close friends and loved ones\u2014those here who grieve the loss of someone they look up to and will deeply miss.\u201d\n\n\u201cWe pray and hope for Stassi\u2019s strength and full recovery\u2014and for his wife and family,\u201dcontinued Dr. Cassidy.\n\nCassidy\u2019s remarks as prepared for delivery are below:\n\nMr. President,\n\nOn Monday evening, a tragedy occurred at a courthouse building in Plaquemine, Louisiana.\n\nCaptain Brett Stassi Jr. of the Iberville Parish Sheriff\u2019s Office, the son of Sheriff Stassi, and Deputy Charles Riley were shot by a suspect they were attempting to arrest in connection with a sexual assault case.\n\nThe two officers were taken to a hospital, where Deputy Riley\u2014a six-year veteran of the Iberville Parish Sheriff\u2019s Office, husband, and father\u2014died.\n\nCaptain Stassi, I\u2019m told, has undergone surgeries and is in critical but stable condition as of now.\n\nThese officers were attacked while booking a sex offender.\n\nMr. President, a tragedy like this reminds us that law enforcement officers put their lives on the line for us every single day.\n\nWe can never take that for granted.\n\nDeputy Riley gave his life protecting our community.\n\nWe pray for his close friends and loved ones\u2014those here who grieve the loss of someone they look up to and will deeply miss.\n\nOur hearts are with the fellow deputies who are hurting and the Plaquemine community.\n\nWe pray and hope for Stassi\u2019s strength and full recovery\u2014and for his wife and family.\n\nThe support we get from law enforcement\u2014the willingness to put themselves in harm\u2019s way\u2014can never be repaid.\n\nWe should support law enforcement, as well as those who are suffering in the wake of this tragedy.\n\nWith that, I yield.\n\n###", 1, "2026-03-30T01:40:41Z", "2026-04-06T19:32:54Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://www.cassidy.senate.gov/newsroom/press-releases/cassidy-delivers-speech-honoring-two-louisiana-police-officers-shot-in-the-line-of-duty/"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 0.8117998950183392, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
