COUNTIES RECIEVE $1.98 MILLION FOR PAYMENT IN LIEU OF TAXES", "2016-06-22", "2016", "2016-06", "Republican", "House", "MS", "Thad Cochran", "C000567", "www.cochran.senate.gov", null, null, "legacy", "WASHINGTON, D.C. \u2014 U.S. Senator Thad Cochran (R-Miss.), chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced that counties in Mississippi will share $1.98 million in 2016 Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILT) funding.The U.S. Department of the Interior on Wednesday announced the distribution of 2016 PILT payments to local governments with tax-exempt federal property within their boundaries.\u00a0 This year\u2019s $1,988,191 award to Mississippi is $154,248 more than the 2015 payment.\u201cThe Payment in Lieu of Taxes payment is intended to help offset tax revenue losses in counties with federal properties, including wildlife refuges or national parks.\u00a0 The counties are free to use the funding to supplement their general budgets,\u201d Cochran said.For Mississippi, 73 counties will receive 2016 PILT funding, with the five largest payments going to Lafayette County ($220,960), Yalobusha County ($171,684), Sharkey County ($140,873), Grenada County ($118,777), and Wayne County ($86,305).Annual PILT payments are made for tax-exempt federal lands administered by the Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and U.S. Forest Service.\u00a0 Federal water projects and some military installations are also considered in PILT payment evaluations.Cochran is a senior member of the Senate appropriations subcommittee that funds the Interior Department and PILT program.\u00a0 The Interior and Environment Appropriations Bill approved by the Senate Appropriations Committee last week fully funds PILT for FY2017.\r\n###\r\n  LINKS  \u2022\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a02016 PILT Payments to Mississippi Counties:\u00a0 http://1.usa.gov/28MVCxi   \u2022\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Payment in Lieu of Taxes:\u00a0 https://www.doi.gov/pilt/", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://www.cochran.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/news-releases?ContentRecord_id=041DD1C8-51FF-4175-B191-A67E3056BD2E"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 0.8604810573160648, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
