LAWMAKERS WELCOME USAF DECISION EASING RESTRICTIONS ON KEESLER AIRLIFT SQUADRON", "2014-07-28", "2014", "2014-07", "Republican", "House", "MS", "Thad Cochran", "C000567", "www.cochran.senate.gov", null, null, "legacy", "WASHINGTON \u2013 U.S. Senators Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) and Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), with Congressman Steven Palazzo (R-Miss.), today welcomed a U.S. Air Force decision to rescind personnel restrictions on the 815th Tactical Airlift Squadron at Keesler Air Force Base, and indicated their continuing commitment to demand that the Air Force justify its targeting of the squadron for deactivation this year.\r\nThe Mississippi lawmakers were informed Monday that the Air Force has withdrawn a provision in its November 2013 deactivation notice that prohibited replacing personnel for the 815th Airlift Squadron.\u00a0 Dropping that provision should allow the unit to at least maintain its current strength at Keesler as attempts are made to retain the squadron and its C-130J \u201cFlying Jennies\u201d in South Mississippi.\u00a0 The Air Force has most recently proposed moving the aircraft to a unit in Arkansas.\r\n\u201cI\u2019m pleased the Air Force is creating an opportunity for the 815th to maintain personnel capacity.\u00a0 Nevertheless, the Air Force has yet to provide a satisfactory cost analysis or justification for again targeting this squadron for deactivation,\u201d said Cochran, the vice chairman of the Senate Defense Appropriations Subcommittee.\u00a0 \u201cWe will continue to press the Defense Department until we are convinced that this plan makes sense from a budgetary and force structure perspective.\u00a0 So far, that has not been demonstrated.\u201d\r\n\u201cThe Air Force has made the prudent decision to allow Keesler AFB the ability to hire and replace personnel,\u201d Wicker said.\u00a0 \u201cFilling vacant maintenance positions is critical to ensuring that the 403rd Wing is able to meet mission requirements.\u00a0 As ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Subcommittee on Airland, I will continue to fight the Air Force\u2019s ill-conceived proposal to transfer the C-130Js from Keesler, which have served our military and the Gulf Coast well.\u201d\r\n\u201cI am pleased to hear that the Air Force has thought better of their decision to further dismantle the 815th by not replacing the personnel.\u00a0 Since the first announcement of these planes leaving was made in February of 2012, we have been fighting it at every turn.\u00a0 It remains my sincere hope that the Air Force will see the error of their ways and commit to keeping the 815th and all their personnel at Keesler,\u201d Palazzo said.\r\nAs members of Mississippi\u2019s congressional delegation, the three lawmakers have used their respective committee assignments to challenge the Air Force\u2019s renewed plans to scuttle the 815th squadron.\u00a0 Air Force officials have maintained that the move is necessary under the Total Force Plan to restructure Air Force assets and reduce the number of C-130 aircraft in its inventory.\r\nIn May, the Senate Armed Services Committee approved the FY2015 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that includes a Wicker provision that would prohibit any movement of aircraft until 60 days after the Air Force provides detailed written reports to Congress.\u00a0 Additionally, the Air Force Comptroller General would be required to send a separate report to the Air Force on cost assessment 45 days after the original reports are received.\u00a0 Although the proposed transfer of C-130Js is scheduled for this year, the committee expects the Air Force to comply with the provision until the FY2015 NDAA is enacted.\r\nThe Air Force previously proposed and then abandoned plans to move the \u201cFlying Jennies\u201d aircraft, first to Georgia and then to North Carolina, before proposing last fall to transfer the Keesler aircraft to the reactivated 913th Airlift Group in Arkansas.\r\n###", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://www.cochran.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/news-releases?ContentRecord_id=27a19ff4-bd23-4123-abf3-782195a9e84a"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 0.741556053981185, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
