Donald C. Carwile, who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2008.Before adjourning the 114th Congress early Saturday morning, the Senate approved a bill Kelly introduced (HR.5309) to honor Carwile by naming the U.S. Postal Service facility at 401 McElroy Drive, Oxford, the \u201cArmy First Lieutenant Donald C. Carwile Post Office Building.\u201d\u201cI look forward to the President signing this bill so that this building can stand as a reminder of Lieutenant Carwile\u2019s brave service and sacrifice.\u00a0 I\u2019m pleased that his life will be honored in his hometown,\u201d Cochran said.\u201cMississippians who never got the chance to meet First Lieutenant Carwile will know of his service and sacrifice because of this post office,\u201d said Wicker.\u00a0 \u201cI appreciate the work that Congressman Kelly put forward to make this tribute a reality for the Oxford community and First Lieutenant Carwile\u2019s family.\u201d\u201cArmy First Lieutenant Carwile is a hero.\u00a0 We will never forget his sacrifice to protect our freedoms in this great nation.\u00a0 It is important to honor notable Mississippians who are willing and proud to pay that price.\u00a0 Everyone who passes through the doors of the post office will be reminded of a soldier who loved his country,\u201d Kelly said.Carwile\u2019s father Dennis said, \u201cI\u2019m really proud.\u00a0 It\u2019s an honor for me and my wife Judy.\u00a0 He\u2019s always going to be our hero.\u00a0 I can\u2019t be more pleased that this has happened.\u00a0 I can\u2019t thank everybody enough that has worked to get this done.\u201dCarwile was killed on Aug. 15, 2008, during a combat mission in Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.\u00a0 Carwile, a Lafayette High School graduate, enlisted in the Army in 2006 and qualified for Officer Candidate School.\u00a0 He earned numerous service awards and decorations, including the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart.The House of Representatives passed Kelly\u2019s bill in September.\u00a0 It was approved in the Senate by unanimous consent Saturday, after being blocked earlier in the week as part of the legislative wrangling associated with the end of the congressional session.\u00a0 Cochran and Wicker pressed for the legislation to be considered and approved before the Senate adjourned this weekend.\r\n###", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://www.cochran.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/news-releases?ContentRecord_id=FF7D48A8-DD5C-4B06-91F2-94B2E613CD3F"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 0.9485520422458649, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
