{"database": "press", "table": "releases", "rows": [["https://www.cochran.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/news-releases?ContentRecord_id=a29b6d60-0ced-4c27-a02a-964480e2acdb", "COCHRAN:  MISSISSIPPI 4-H GETS $82,000 BOOST FOR MENTOR PROGRAMS", "2014-10-31", "2014", "2014-10", "Republican", "House", "MS", "Thad Cochran", "C000567", "www.cochran.senate.gov", null, null, "legacy", "WASHINGTON, D.C. \u2013 U.S. Senator Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) today announced that the Mississippi State University Cooperative Extension Service has been awarded $82,000 to support 4-H mentoring programs throughout the state.\r\nThe National 4-H Council approved the award to promote 4-H National Mentoring Program mentoring activities in Mississippi, which are geared toward helping at-risk youth avoid juvenile delinquency through community-based educational programs.\u00a0 The funding derives from congressional appropriations for the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP).\r\n\u201cI am pleased that these resources will be put to work in Mississippi.\u00a0 I appreciate the good work being done by the 4-H and the Mississippi Extension Service to create opportunities for youth in our state,\u201d Cochran said.\r\n\u201cThe mentor programs are dedicated to improving the education and wellness of children.\u00a0 The Congress has recognized that organizations like 4-H can effectively reach youth in need of positive role models and constructive activities,\u201d he said.\r\nThe grant will be used to strengthen, expand and implement 4-H youth mentoring programs developed in partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Children, Youth and Families at Risk Program.\u00a0 The OJJDP funding is intended to reduce juvenile delinquency, drug abuse, truancy, and other problems and high-risk behaviors.\r\nAccording to The Mentoring Effect: Young People\u2019s Perspective on the Outcomes and Availability of Mentoring, 76 percent of at-risk young adults who had a mentor aspire to enroll in and graduate from college versus half of at-risk young adults who had not had a mentor.\r\nCochran, a former 4-H member, has been supportive of mentoring programs and those who volunteer their time and efforts to reach at-risk youth.\u00a0 He serves on the Senate Appropriations Committee that funds the OJJDP.\r\nLINKS:  \u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Mississippi 4-H:\u00a0 http://bit.ly/1uHnNGj   \u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 4-H National Mentoring Program:\u00a0 http://bit.ly/1E8zmIc\r\n###", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://www.cochran.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/news-releases?ContentRecord_id=a29b6d60-0ced-4c27-a02a-964480e2acdb"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 1.6299609560519457, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
