The post office is located at 130 Caldwell Drive in Hazlehurst.\r\n\u201cLieutenant Cockrell\u2019s selfless service, sound character, and example of citizenship is remembered today,\u201d Cochran said.\u00a0 \u201cThe naming of the post office in Hazlehurst for First Lieutenant Alvin Cockrell will honor his heroic service, his family, Hazlehurst and Copiah County.\u201d\r\n\u201cI am pleased that Congress has approved this fitting tribute to First Lieutenant Cockrell,\u201d Wicker said. \u201cHis story serves as a stark reminder of the sacrifice paid by so many of the \u2018Greatest Generation.\u2019 This Act will ensure that his memory and heroism will continue to live on \u2013 especially for those in his hometown of Hazlehurst.\u201d\r\n\u00a0A native of Hazlehurst, Cockrell enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps (Reserve) as an 18-year-old in 1937.\u00a0 Appointed a 1st Lieutenant on Dec. 2, 1941, Cockrell was cited for \u201cextraordinary heroism\u201d as a platoon leader in fighting Japanese forces near Mambulo, Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands.\u00a0 He lost is life in combat there on Sept. 24, 1942, and was posthumously awarded both the Navy Cross and the Purple Heart for his distinguished service.\r\nLINK:  \u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Missing Marines/Alvin Chester Cockrell, Jr. http://bit.ly/1xyufAR\r\n###", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://www.cochran.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/news-releases?ContentRecord_id=b9756929-abe3-45a9-bc3d-853e5351c782"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 0.9339198004454374, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
