Senator Collins was joined at the event by Sweden Fire Chief Tim Cook, Deputy Fire Chief Tommie McKenzie, Sweden Select Board Chair Kerry Welton, members of the Sweden Fire Department, town officials, and local residents.\n\n\u201cHere in Maine, one of our greatest needs is replacing or renovating obsolete public safety facilities,\u201d said Senator Collins during her remarks. \u201cThis new station replaces a building from the 1800s, once a general store, that lacked adequate storage, running water, and dedicated space for Sweden\u2019s brave volunteer firefighters. I am so pleased that the new station we celebrate today addresses those longstanding deficiencies and will better serve this rural community.\u201d\n\nFollowing her remarks, Senator Collins presented an American flag flown over the U.S. Capitol to Chief Cook in honor of the new station.\n\nSenator Collins secured $1.15 million through her role on the Senate Appropriations Committee to support the construction of the new fire station. The new facility includes ample space for equipment and storage, multiple restrooms with showers, a kitchen area, and decontamination equipment.
