The bill Senator Crapo co-sponsored would make certain the revenue collected through the 9/11 Passenger Security Fee (PSF) is invested in bolstering aviation and airport security.\n\n\u201cPassenger security fees should be used as intended\u2014to fund aviation security activities,\u201d said Crapo. \u201cYears of diverting these funds have hampered TSA\u2019s ability to implement modernized screening technologies, particularly at checkpoints with high passenger volumes.\u201d\n\nAirline passengers currently pay a fee of $5.60 per each one-way ticket, intended to fund aviation security. Since 2014, more than $13 billion of the collected fees have been diverted to non-security uses, and this legislation would end that diversion and invest these fees back into airport security.\n\nThe Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screens millions of passengers and their luggage daily, providing services at 2,400 security lanes at the nation's 420 airports.\n\nThe SAFEGUARDS Act would:\n\nAllocate $500 million in PSF revenue annually for checked bag explosive detection systems (EDS); and\n\nSet aside $250 million annually for checkpoint technology improvements, including at exit lanes.\n\nTSA has screening checkpoints at all six of Idaho\u2019s major commercial airports, including Boise Airport (BOI), Idaho Falls Regional Airport (IDA), Friedman Memorial Airport (SUN), Pocatello Regional Airport (PIH), Lewiston-Nez Perce County Airport (LWS) and Magic Valley Regional Airport (TWF).", 1, "2026-03-30T01:40:41Z", "2026-04-06T20:09:11Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://www.crapo.senate.gov/media/newsreleases/crapo-backs-bill-to-bolster-aviation-safety"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 1.4038020744919777, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
