{"database": "press", "table": "releases", "rows": [["https://www.crapo.senate.gov/media/newsreleases/crapo-joins-graham-to-introduce-legislation-to-combat-smash-and-grab-crimes", "Crapo Joins Graham to Introduce Legislation to Combat \u2018Smash-And-Grab\u2019 Crimes", "2026-06-10", "2026", "2026-06", "Republican", "Senate", "ID", "Mike Crapo", "C000880", "www.crapo.senate.gov", "crapo", "https://www.crapo.senate.gov/media/newsreleases", "scraper", "Washington, D.C.\u2014U.S. Senator Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) joined Senator Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) to introduce the Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL) Protection Act of 2026 to address the dangerously high number of \u201csmash-and-grab\u201d thefts targeting gun dealers by enhancing penalties for criminals who steal firearms from federally licensed firearms and ammunition dealers.\n\nThe Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) reported that from 2021 to 2025, 4,046 FFL theft incidents were reported. During these incidents, criminals stole a total of 23,319 firearms from FFLs.\n\n\u201cThe frequency of firearm theft has risen dramatically in recent years, contributing to dangerous activity in the illegal markets,\u201d said Crapo. \u201cTougher criminal penalties are needed to protect licensed firearm dealers, importers and manufacturers and help reduce the public safety risk.\u201d\n\n\u201cI am proud to reintroduce this important legislation to make \u2018smash-and-grabs\u2019 more costly for criminals,\u201d said Graham. \u201cAmericans have a right to lawfully buy, own and sell firearms \u2013 criminals who steal them must pay the price.\u201d\n\nThe legislation is supported by NSSF, The Firearm Industry Trade Association.\n\nIn addition to Crapo, the legislation is also co-sponsored by U.S. Senators Jim Risch (R-Idaho), Ted Budd (R-North Carolina), Katie Britt (R-Alabama), Marsha Blackburn (R-Tennessee), Kevin Cramer (R-North Dakota), Bill Cassidy (R-Louisiana), Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas), Shelley Moore Capito (R-West Virginia), John Cornyn (R-Texas), Steve Daines (R-Montana), Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), Bill Hagerty (R-Tennessee), John Hoeven (R-North Dakota), Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Mississippi), Jim Justice (R-West Virginia), Pete Ricketts (R-Nebraska) and Thom Tillis (R-North Carolina).\n\nThe FFL Protection Act of 2026 would:\n\nIncrease the statutory maximum penalty for knowingly stealing any firearm in an FFL\u2019s business inventory from 10 to 20 years.\n\nImpose a mandatory minimum sentence of three years for burglary from an FFL and five years for robbery from an FFL.\n\nCriminalize the attempted theft of a firearm from a licensed importer, manufacturer, dealer or collector.\n\nThe full text of the bill is available HERE.\n\n###", 1, "2026-06-11T06:38:38Z", "2026-06-11T06:41:07Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://www.crapo.senate.gov/media/newsreleases/crapo-joins-graham-to-introduce-legislation-to-combat-smash-and-grab-crimes"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 0.954669900238514, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
