{"database": "press", "table": "releases", "rows": [["https://www.crapo.senate.gov/media/newsreleases/release_full.cfm?id=355211", "Affordable Wood Stove Heat May Be In Jeopardy", "2014-08-15", "2014", "2014-08", "Republican", "House", "ID", "Michael Crapo", "C000880", "www.crapo.senate.gov", null, null, "legacy", "August 15, 2014\n\t\t\t Affordable Wood Stove Heat May Be In Jeopardy \n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t \n\t\n\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\n        \n\t\t\t\t Kuma Stoves, Crapo to discuss new federal regulations \n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tRathdrum\u00a0- Many Idahoans and Northwest residents heat their homes with wood and wood stoves, but that affordable heating source may soon become complicated because of newly proposed federal regulations.\u00a0 Idaho Senator Mike Crapo will meet with the owner of Idaho-based Kuma Stoves\u00a0Monday,\u00a0August 18, 2014,\u00a0to discuss the new regulations and their effect on consumers.\r\nKuma Stoves is an Idaho family-owned manufacturer of wood stoves using all-American parts, including doors produced at a foundry in nearby Spokane.\u00a0 The company, founded in 1981,\u00a0continues to\u00a0create\u00a0and provide\u00a0jobs at the Rathdrum location and with its manufacturing and retail partners throughout the region.\r\nWood stove manufacturers are under pressure\u00a0yet again to lower federal emission standards, this time to a level that may not be attainable financially or\u00a0technologically for consumers or the wood stove industry.\u00a0 Kuma Stoves President Mark Freeman notes that, before the hearth industry worked to develop new technologies,\u00a0older stoves in the mid-1980s\u00a0would emit an average of 60 grams per hour of particulates.\u00a0\u00a0In 1988\u00a0the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) stepped in\u00a0and worked with the hearth industry to\u00a0lower emissions to 7.5 grams per hour\u00a0for all new stoves.\u00a0 The newly proposed EPA regulations\u00a0would lower that again to 4.5 grams per hour by the end of next year, and\u00a0possibly to 1.3 grams per hour by 2020.\u00a0\u00a0In addition, the EPA proposes to radically change the fuel and the test methods for the 2020 targets.\r\n\"We are making stoves that are efficient and affordable but these new regulations may change that,\" said Freeman.\u00a0 \"The ironic part is that these changes will raise prices and cause consumers to not upgrade their old units, meaning the air will get dirtier instead of cleaner.\u00a0 We just want some fairness in this process and for the\u00a0EPA to hear the\u00a0industry's concerns, especially that of small businesses like ours, regarding both the benefits and costs of the new emission targets\".\u00a0\r\nCrapo is a member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, with jurisdiction over the EPA. \"Monday's\u00a0meeting is a call to action for consumers and industry alike to let the EPA know that public health and jobs are at issue with how far we go with these new regulations.\u00a0 Worse yet, the EPA has unfortunately fallen into a pattern that uses non-public data and undisclosed models with the science the agency uses to craft regulations.\u00a0 We need the light of day on this issue and others and we are asking Idahoans to weigh in.\"\u00a0 Crapo has joined committee colleagues and Idaho Senator Jim Risch to introduce S. 2613, the Secret Science Reform Act, which would prohibit the EPA from proposing or finalizing regulations based on science that is not made publicly available to the American people and that is not\u00a0reproducible.\u00a0 A similar measure has been introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives.\r\n\r\n  \r\n    News Conference and Tour of Kuma Stoves:\r\n  \r\n\r\n\r\n  Monday, August 18\r\n\r\n\r\n  1:00 PM\r\n\r\n\r\n  Kuma Stoves Manufacturing Facility\r\n\r\n\r\n  50145 Old Highway 95 (just north of Coeur d'Alene off U.S. 95)\r\n\r\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\n\t  \n\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t \n\t\t\n\t\t\tPrint\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tEmail\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\tTweet\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\n\t \n\t\n\t\n\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\n    \n\t\n\t\n    \n    \n    \n    \t\n    \t\n\t    \t  \n\t\t    \n\t\t    \tNext Article", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://www.crapo.senate.gov/media/newsreleases/release_full.cfm?id=355211"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 0.9255958721041679, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
