Cruz, Rubio Send Letter to President Biden Against Any Further Concessions to Maduro Regime", "2022-11-02", "2022", "2022-11", "Republican", "Senate", "TX", "Ted Cruz", "C001098", "www.cruz.senate.gov", "cruz", "https://www.cruz.senate.gov/newsroom/press-releases", "scraper", "WASHINGTON, D.C. \u2013 U.S. Senators Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) sent a letter to President Joe Biden expressing concern over recent concessions to the Nicolas Maduro regime in Venezuela and calling on the administration to halt plans for further reported concessions.\n\nThe Senators wrote:\n\n\u201cYour administration\u2019s actions give unwarranted and dangerous legitimacy to the Nicolas Maduro regime, which are detrimental to the prospects for free and fair elections, the release of all political prisoners in Venezuela, and the return of imprisoned Americans being used as political pawns.\u201d\n\nBiden administration\u2019s has recently unwound energy sanctions on Venezuela and released family members of Maduro convicted and sentenced in the United States for drug trafficking.\n\nSen. Cruz has led efforts to sanction Venezuelan military officials who have been involved in seizing and imprisoning American hostages.\n\nRead the text of the full letter here or below.\n\nDear Mr. President:\n\nWe write to express serious concern that actions taken by your administration are threatening to erode the international recognition and legitimacy of Juan Guaid\u00f3 as the Interim President of Venezuela and of the National Assembly. Simultaneously, your administration\u2019s actions give unwarranted and dangerous legitimacy to the Nicolas Maduro regime, which are detrimental to the prospects for free and fair elections, the release of all political prisoners in Venezuela, and the return of imprisoned Americans being used as political pawns.\n\nThe recent release from prison of Franqui Francisco Flores de Freitas and Efrain Antonio Campo Flores, illegitimate first lady Cilia Flores\u2019s nephews who were convicted and sentenced, in 2017, to 18 years in federal prison for conspiracy to smuggle cocaine into the United States, was misguided. Such actions undermine the rule of law, our credibility in the region, and give dictators the assurance that kidnapping innocent Americans to negotiate concessions is always on the table with this administration. We are also concerned with recent reports that your administration is considering allowing Chevron to restart oil operations with Petroleos de Venezuela SA (PDVSA), the Maduro regime\u2019s oil company, which remains under U.S. sanctions.\n\nAs your administration continues to entertain and support perpetual negotiations with the illegitimate Maduro regime, at no point should your administration take any of the following actions:\n\nRelease Alex Saab, financier and money launderer for Maduro who was indicted in the United States on multiple counts of money laundering and currently awaiting trial in the Southern District of Florida;\n\nRemove or lessen any sanctions currently in place for PDVSA, the state-owned oil company that provides the regime with a source of income;\n\nGrant or otherwise facilitate the regime\u2019s access to frozen assets;\n\nRemove sanctions on individual Venezuelan nationals;\n\nRemove sanctions on the Venezuelan Central Bank (BCV) and the Venezuelan Economic and Social Development Bank (BANDES) and subsidiaries;\n\nAllow transactions to purchase new debt;\n\nRemove sanctions against state-owned mining company CVG Compania General de Minervia de Venezuela (MINERVEN); and\n\nExclude the interim government from any negotiation process with the Maduro Regime.\n\nConceding any of the above actions would undermine prospects for the return of democracy to Venezuela. Negotiations with a dictator will only beget more negotiations with a dictator, and the damage done in the meantime is disastrous.
