I strongly oppose this unnecessary tax from President Biden and stand with Montanans\u2019 right to lawfully possess firearms,\u201d said Daines.\n\nText of the legislation may be found here.\n\nBackground:\n\nThe 1934 National Firearms Act (NFA) regulates short-barreled shotguns and rifles, fully automatic firearms, suppressors, and a catchall category of explosives. In addition to background checks and registration, NFA regulated items have a $200 tax.\n\nThe ATF has acknowledged the tax was intended \u201cto curtail, if not prohibit, transactions\u201d of firearms. The $200 tax, unchanged since 1934, is equivalent to $4,648 in today\u2019s dollars.\n\nSince 2018, ownership of NFA regulated items have grown by more than 250% as more sportsmen, shooters and firearm enthusiasts exercise their Second Amendment right.\n\nThe RIFLE Act does not modify the current checks and registration; it solely removes the federally mandated financial burden on law-abiding gun owners.\n\nThe legislation is endorsed by the National Rifle Association and the National Shooting Sports Foundation.", 1, "2026-03-30T01:40:41Z", "2026-04-07T21:01:11Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://www.daines.senate.gov/2024/05/23/daines-leads-effort-to-protect-montana-gun-owners-from-burdensome-gun-tax/"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 1.7063370905816555, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
