U.S. Senator John McCain [R-Ariz.], Vietnam War Veteran, POW, and Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, joined Donnelly to make the announcement.\r\n\u00a0\r\nWATCH: Donnelly and McCain announce event in Indiana celebrating National Vietnam Veterans Day 2018\r\nDonnelly said, \u201cIndiana is home to nearly 150,000 Vietnam War Veterans. On March 29, 2018, I\u2019m hosting an event to recognize Vietnam Veterans from across our state and give them the welcome home with their families that they deserve and should have received when they returned home from serving our country.\u201d\r\nMcCain said, \u201cAll of us are indebted to the generations of brave Americans who have sacrificed life and limb to preserve our freedom, which is why I\u2019m grateful for Senator Donnelly\u2019s bipartisan legislation with Senator Pat Toomey that officially designates March 29th as National Vietnam War Veterans Day.\u201d\r\nBipartisan legislation authored by Donnelly and Senator Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) permanently designating March 29 as National Vietnam War Veterans Day was signed into law\u00a0by President Trump in March of 2017. The inaugural National Vietnam Veterans Day was celebrated on March 29, 2017.\r\nFurther details on the 2018 National Vietnam Veterans Day event in Indiana will be announced in the coming weeks and months.\r\nBACKGROUND:\r\n \r\nPermanently designates March 29th annually as National Vietnam War Veterans Day.\r\nOn March 29, 1973, the last combat troops were ordered out of Vietnam.\r\nWhile many troops remained behind before the fall of Saigon \u2013 March 29 holds great meaning for many Vietnam veterans.\r\nIncludes March 29th as a day \u201cthe flag should be displayed.\u201d\r\n \r\nThe Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act was passed unanimously by both chambers of Congress.\r\nTranscript of Donnelly and McCain\u2019s video statement:\r\nDonnelly: Hello, I\u2019m Senator Joe Donnelly and I\u2019m privileged to be here for a special announcement with my friend \u2014 an American hero and chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee \u2014 Senator John McCain of Arizona.\r\nMcCain: Well, Thank you Joe.
