{"database": "press", "table": "releases", "rows": [["https://www.donnelly.senate.gov/newsroom/press/donnelly-announces-grant-for-purdue-to-help-bridge-skills-gap-in-northwest-indiana", "Donnelly Announces Grant for Purdue to Help Bridge Skills Gap in Northwest Indiana", "2013-09-20", "2013", "2013-09", "Democrat", "House", "IN", "Joe Donnelly", "D000607", "www.donnelly.senate.gov", null, null, "legacy", "Donnelly Announces Grant for Purdue to Help Bridge Skills Gap in Northwest Indiana\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\tFriday, September 20, 2013\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tWashington, D.C. \u2014 Senator Joe Donnelly today announced a federal grant awarded by the Department of Labor (DOL) to Purdue University Calumet\u2019s School of Technology that would continue a training program designed to help Hoosiers gain the skills demanded by employers in our state\u2019s manufacturing industry.\r\nAs part of the DOL\u2019s Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) Community College and Career Training Grant Program, this grant awarded to Purdue University for approximately $2.7 million will help fund the university\u2019s existing Assisting Workforce by Advancing Knowledge for Employment (AWAKE) program.\u00a0 Purdue\u2019s AWAKE program provides training for reemployment to TAA-eligible workers, veterans, and other adults for reemployment with manufacturing employers in Lake, Porter, Jasper, and Newton Counties.\r\nDonnelly said, \u201cI hear from employers in Indiana\u2019s manufacturing industry who have positions available but can\u2019t find the workers who have the training demanded for the open jobs. I\u2019m pleased the Department of Labor awarded Purdue University this grant because it will help bridge the existing skills gap and help Hoosiers find additional job opportunities in Northwest Indiana.\u201d\r\nThomas L. Keon, Chancellor of Purdue University Calumet said, \u201cOur College of Technology has been working on workforce development in northwest Indiana for several years. Manufacturing partners of our university need an educated workforce with proper training at many different levels. Purdue Calumet\u2019s College of Technology is dedicated to providing qualified graduates and training the northwest Indiana workforce in areas of sophistication that are needed in ever-evolving manufacturing technologies.\u201d\r\nThe DOL\u2019s TAA Community College and Career Training Grant Program promotes skills development and employment opportunities in fields such as advanced manufacturing transportation, and heath care, as well as science, technology, engineering and math careers through partnerships between training providers and local employers.
