{"database": "press", "table": "releases", "rows": [["https://www.donnelly.senate.gov/newsroom/press/donnelly-pleased-that-alicia-dawn-koehl-respect-for-national-cemeteries-act-passes-house", "Donnelly Pleased that Alicia Dawn Koehl Respect for National Cemeteries Act Passes House", "2013-12-11", "2013", "2013-12", "Democrat", "House", "IN", "Joe Donnelly", "D000607", "www.donnelly.senate.gov", null, null, "legacy", "Donnelly Pleased that Alicia Dawn Koehl Respect for National Cemeteries Act Passes House\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\tWednesday, December 11, 2013\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tWashington, D.C. \u2013 Senator Joe Donnelly (D-IN) released the statement below following House passage of the Alicia Dawn Koehl Respect for National Cemeteries Act, legislation introduced in the Senate by Senator Donnelly and Senator Dan Coats (R-IN), and in the House by Representative Susan Brooks (IN-05).\r\n\u201cI am pleased the House has passed the Alicia Koehl Respect for National Cemeteries Act, legislation I have worked on and advocated for in Congress for many months,\u201d said Donnelly.\u00a0 \u201cI hope the President quickly signs this bill into law, so the Koehl family can be given some sense of relief from these tragic and terrible circumstances.\u00a0 We must honor the memory of Alicia Koehl and help preserve the honor of being buried in a veterans\u2019 cemetery.\u201d\r\nThe bill would give the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the U.S. Department of the Army the authority to disinter veterans buried in national cemeteries who committed a Federal or State capital crime.\u00a0 Current statute prohibits burying veterans who committed a Federal or State capital crime, but does not allow the VA or Army to correct a mistake that has been made.\u00a0 Under the legislation, the VA would have the authority it needs to exhume the remains of Michael LeShawn Anderson, a veteran who shot and killed Indianapolis resident Alicia Dawn Koehl last year before committing suicide.
