{"database": "press", "table": "releases", "rows": [["https://www.donnelly.senate.gov/newsroom/press/donnelly-releases-white-paper-on-five-years-of-investment-in-indianas-auto-industry", "Donnelly Releases White Paper on Five Years of Investment in Indiana\u2019s Auto Industry", "2013-12-10", "2013", "2013-12", "Democrat", "House", "IN", "Joe Donnelly", "D000607", "www.donnelly.senate.gov", null, null, "legacy", "Donnelly Releases White Paper on Five Years of Investment in Indiana\u2019s Auto Industry\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tVisited auto plants in Greensburg, Lafayette, Princeton, Bedford, Marion, Kokomo, and Fort Wayne last week\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\tTuesday, December 10, 2013\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tWashington, D.C. \u2013 Today, Senator Joe Donnelly\u2019s office released a white paper detailing\u00a0the recent history of the auto industry as well as the progress being made in this sector of\u00a0Indiana\u2019s economy. \u00a0The paper highlights how the automotive industry, since late 2008, has invested in Hoosier communities and created jobs.\r\nLast week, Senator Donnelly visited seven auto manufacturing facilities around Indiana to recognize the hard work of Hoosiers.\u00a0 He visited GM plants in Fort Wayne, Marion, and Bedford, visited a Toyota plant in Princeton, a Honda plant in Greensburg, a Subaru plant in Lafayette, and a Chrysler plant in Kokomo. \u00a0Click\u00a0here\u00a0to see photos.\r\nDonnelly said, \u201cOne thing I said five years ago when all this occurred, is I said, \u2018Look \u2013 we are being asked whether or not to bet on Hoosier workers, the Hoosier work ethic, and the future of our manufacturing.\u2019 I support that, I believe in our ability to get this done and get it done right, and it has been shown by the people of our state, by our workers, by these companies that they have done an extraordinary job in coming back and making the best-quality vehicles in the world.\u201d\r\nIn 2008, automobile sales sharply declined across the United States as a result of the Great Recession.\u00a0 The U.S. auto industry neared a collapse that would have been devastating to the economy, with Indiana having more to lose in a collapse than nearly any other state in the country.\u00a0\r\nBoth the Bush and Obama administrations realized that the collapse of the U.S. auto industry would have been devastating to the U.S. economy.\u00a0 President Bush, unable to persuade Congress to support a plan to assist the industry, sidestepped Congress and provided a $17.4 billion loan to General Motors and Chrysler.\r\nFive years later, Indiana\u2019s automotive industry is back to 2008 employment levels, with nearly 102,000 Hoosiers employed in the automotive manufacturing sector.[1] Additionally, Indiana is now the second largest automotive manufacturer in the country, surpassing Ohio for the second slot.[2]\r\n###\r\n    \r\n\r\n[1] McAlinden, Sean and Menk, Debra.
